INTRODUCTION

Tha Vatican Meteorite Collection is housed in a single wood and glass case in the Vatican Observatory Museum at Castel Gandolfo. Most of the specimens were obtained through a donation of Adrian Charles, Marquis de Mauroy, but a number of other specimens have been obtained through later gifts and previously by the Vatican Observatory (Salpeter 1957), and an inventory of the present collection has appeared recently in Meteoritics (Salvatori et al.1984). This new catalog was necessitated by the state of the collection prior to June 1983, at which time the collection was in general disarray. Many specimens had lost or become separated from their labels, and a number of specimens appeared to lack documentation of their origin or disposition. It was obvious that a new catalog of the collection was needed and that the collection also required more secure storage and systematic arrangement.

STORAGE AND ARRANGEMENT

The entire Vatican Meteorite Collection of 1020 specimens of approximately 448 different falls and finds is stored in a wood and glass cabinet and drawers in the museum on the ground floor of the Papal Palace at Castel Gandolfo. The great bulk of the collection is contained in saled polyethylene bags arranged alphabetically by British Museum catalog name in the bottom of the case. each bag contains one or more specimens with all of the applicable previous labels thet may have been found. These were either found with the specimens or identified by recorded sample weights and a process of elimination. During the preparation of this catalog virtually all specimens were weighed to an accuracy of approximately plus or minus 0.5 gm for the larger pieces. The only specimens not weighed were those taht are particularly fragile and sensitive to contamination (already in saled containers), such as sample of Orgueil, or specimens that were too small to weigh accurately with the facilities at hand, i.e. less than about 0.5 gm. A rapresentative portion of the collection is on display on glass shelves above the main sample storage. Each of these specimens has a corresponding plastic bag in thedrawers below that contains a label noting that it is on display. The possibility exists that specimens on display might slide off their shelves due to earth tremors or local vibrations, but these can now easily be identified by comparison of sample weights and the presence of labels on the glass shelves. During cataloging all of the larger specimens were photographed. This collection of photographs is at the Department of Planetology, CNR-IAS. Thus, future confusion of specimens identities due to normal events should be temporary and easily remedied. All thin sections are arranged alphabetically in a single wooden slide box at the bottom of the cabinet which contains eight drawers or trays.
